This box-shaped workshop for Vietnamese artist Le Duc Ha is wrapped in an envelope built from clay bricks. Design studio Tropical Space added perforations in the facade to facilitate natural ventilation and allow daylight to reach even deep into the interior, where the artist produces terracotta artworks at a centrally-positioned turn table.

TROPICAL SPACE is an architecture firm based in Ho Chi Minh city, founded by architects Nguyen Hai Long and Tran Thi Ngu Ngon. We specialise in the design and planning of urban design, master planning, architecture, landscape and interior design.

With a deep understanding of Vietnamese culture and climate, Tropical Space is committed to the use of environmentally friendly building practices and sustainable material selection.

The three-story building, inspired by traditional Vietnamese architecture and the surrounding ecology, is located next to Thu Bon river in Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province. With the natural light changing the atmosphere of the interior spaces during the day, the building aims to mimic the constant flow of the adjacent river. The perforated facade provides an optimal level of privacy for the artist, while bringing natural elements indoors to retain a strong connection with the outdoors.

The three-story wooden frame creates smaller spaces that act as shelves for the finished terracotta works, a hallway and stairs. Visitors can observe the artist at work from different points in the interior, including the mezzanine level that offers a clear view of the round void at the center.
