Vietnam may not be the first country that springs to mind when you think about snow and winter sports, but Japan 2017 will mark a new era in Vietnamese sports as the country makes it’s debut at the 8th Asian Winter Games.
A team of athletes will journey to Sapporo to take part in the Games between the 19 – 26 February 2017 to make history by competing in snowboarding, cross-country skiing and Alpine skiing. The ‘Ground Breaking’ does not however stop there as not only will the team be new to the Asian Winter Games, but also to the snow itself .
Snow conditions are hard to come by in Vietnam, but our intrepid team are not deterred and adapt, putting in the hours of training needed to compete by taking to the sand and the streets instead. Yes Indeed Vietnam’s own version of the famous Jamaican Bobsled Winter Olympic team immortalized in the film ‘Cool Runnings’ but this time its ‘Warm Sliding’s’ Vietnam Style!
And this is just the beginning as Team Vietnam hope to also qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Tucked away in the small, yet vibrant town of Mui Ne in South Central Vietnam is a beach home to some of the most sought after wind and water conditions for water lovers, surfers and kiters worldwide. It also happens to be the home of a young man named Binh Nguyen, one of many locals who fell into the water way of life from a young age.
Binh has a solid reputation as a talented kite boarder, surfer and longboarder, so when he mentioned that he would be in Japan on a snowboarding trip in early 2017 it didn’t come as much of a surprise.
What Binh revealed after however, was slightly more outlandish than we expected. It wasn’t just any run of the mill snowboarding trip,
Binh would in fact be traveling to Japan to compete in the Asian Winter Games to represent the Vietnamese snowboarding team…. Despite the fact that he has never snowboarded before- let alone even seen snow.
